About

The Thematic Working Group (TWG) for Circular Bioeconomy has a focus on Circular Systemic Solutions that use biodegradable and bio-based waste (e.g. bio-waste originated in urban areas, including food and green waste) as feedstock. It also touches upon many economic sectors through different practices, including cascading and biorefinery valorisation routes.

At the local and regional level, several bio-based feedstocks support the circular bioeconomy, including urban sewage sludge, wastewater and food waste from households, supermarkets or businesses, and other biodegradable waste, which includes forestry and agricultural residues, manure and industry bio-based products, depending on the territorial conditions.

Biodegradable and bio-based waste can be turned into opportunities – potentially profitable ones – but can also have negative impacts on our ecosystems, for example through degradation to methane in landfill and environmentally harmful leakages.

The EU has built a regulatory and policy framework to support the circular bioeconomy locally and regionally, accelerating the EU's progress towards a circular and low-carbon economy. The TWG will contribute to modernising and strengthening the EU’s local economies and industrial base, facilitating bio-based value chains and more cost-effective socio-technological processes, while paving the way towards circular bioeconomy solutions.

If you have any questions, you are welcome to contact the TWG leader by emailing the CCRI Coordination and Support Office at helpdesk@circular-cities-and-regions.eu
