Key objectives and (or) targets related to cities & regions

The key objectives for Member States in Directive (EU) 2024/1799 include promoting the repair of goods to enhance sustainability, reducing premature disposal, and fostering a circular economy. Member States are required to ensure that manufacturers provide repair services for products with legally mandated repairability requirements (Article 5), facilitate consumer access to repair information (Article 6), and establish or integrate into a European online platform to help consumers find repair services (Article 7).

Additionally, they must implement at least one measure promoting repair, which could include financial incentives, public awareness campaigns, or support for repair initiatives (Article 13). These objectives relate to cities and regions by encouraging local economic activity through repair services, reducing environmental impacts from waste, and fostering community-led repair initiatives, such as repair cafés and refurbishment programs.

Furthermore, local and regional authorities play an important role in ensuring that repair infrastructures, such as workshops and training programs, are available, thus aligning urban and regional development with the EU’s broader sustainability goals.
