Updated on 02.04.2024

Public procurement is a powerful mechanism for enabling economies to become more circular. How can EU initiatives and projects help local and regional authorities in this field? What are the most promising pathways? What are the remaining challenges?

These are the questions the 4th Circular Cities and Regions Initiative (CCRI) webinar explored.

More information

The webinar presented the strategic work that the European Commission is doing, for instance through the Big Buyers Initiative. Two EU-funded projects were selected as examples to learn from their experience and to explore what they offer to cities and regions. To complete the circle, two inspiring examples from practitioners on the ground were shared (Zero Waste Scotland and Asker Municipality/Norway).

Relevance for Circular Systemic Solutions

Public procurement is a powerful tool for transitioning to a circular economy. It creates opportunities for local and regional public authorities to steer the market towards circularity by creating demand for sustainable/circular products.
