VEEP - Cost-Effective Recycling of CDW in High Added Value Energy Efficient Prefabricated Concrete Components for Massive Retrofitting of our Built Environment
Updated on 02.07.2024
VEEP's main objective is to eco-design, develop and demonstrate new cost-effective technological solutions that will lead to novel closed-loop circular approaches for C&DW recycling into novel multilayer precast concrete elements (for both new buildings and refurbishment) incorporating new concretes as well as superinsulation material produced by using at least 75% (by weight) of C&DW recycled materials.
Relevance for Circular Systemic Solutions
This project has produced many valuable deliverables in the form of technical reports regarding the eco-design, development and demonstration of their new cost-effective technological solutions for C&DW recycling into multilayer precast concrete elements. These reports can help cities better understand the lifecycle analyses of various existing constructional systems and their comparisons to the solutions proposed by the project, for instance: manufacturing processes for energy efficient precast concrete elements, aerogels, standardisation systems, PCEs, recycling technologies for end-of-life concrete, glass and insulating mineral wool waste. These reports can help stakeholders in cities and regions working on CSSs related to the recycling and upcycling of CDW, especially in the Map and Design phases of their CSS deployment.
Main results and lessons learnt
The project produced a number of relevant and useful outputs, mostly in the form of technical reports such as:
- Report on the demonstration of advanced manufacturing processes for new sustainable energy efficient precast concrete elements
- Report on the demonstration of cost-effective sustainable aerogels based on water-glass precursors from silica-rich C&DW recycled materials
- Report on the contribution to the standardization system
- Report on the installation and operational phase of PCEs under real climatic conditions
- Short report on recommendations highlighting the most remarkable environmental and economic benefits from the VEEP solutions
- Report on the demonstration of new advanced recycling technologies for EoL concrete waste, waste building glass and insulating mineral wool waste
- Report on the End-of-Life Phase of the novel VEEP PCEs, mainly focused on reuse and recyclability for the new solutions
