REsources from URban BIo-waSte

Updated on 21.06.2024

RES URBIS aimed at converting several types of urban organic waste into valuable bio-based products, in an integrated biorefinery. Urban organic waste includes the organic fraction of municipal solid waste, excess sludge from urban wastewater treatment, garden and park waste, and selected waste from food-processing. Bio-based products include a biodegradable biopolymer (polyhydroxyalkanoate, PHA) and related PHA-based bioplastics as well as biosolvents (to be used in PHA extraction) and fibers (to be used for PHA biocomposites).

Relevance for Circular Systemic Solutions

This project offers technical and operational reports that can help cities/regions working on bioeconomy related CSSs. Using these reports, other cities/regions can develop ideas on how they can go about converting urban organic waste into valuable bio-based products. While reports related to cluster analysis and legal framework can be helpful during the Map phase of CSS deployment, reports on the process integration as well as CBA and LCA analyses can help during the Design phase.

Main results and lessons learnt

  • Integrated strategic roadmap
  • Report on Social aspects
  • Report on PHA Production
