Intelligence-Driven Urban Internet-of-Things Ecosystems for Trustworthy and Circular Smart Cities

Updated on 16.11.2023

IDEAL-CITIES set out to develop, demonstrate and evaluate an open modular platform for building adaptive, Internet of Things and Participatory Sensing (IoTPS) based Smart City applications, supported by big data analytics and cloud services. It aimed to increase the quality, safety and inclusivity of cities and contribute to their circular economy.

Acronym: IDEAL-CITIES
Countries: France, Greece, Poland, United Kingdom
Project website: https://www.ideal-cities.eu/
Start and end date: 01.07.2018 - 31.12.2023
Budget: 1 611 000 EUR
Funding source: Horizon 2020

More information

IDEAL-CITIES sought to enable citizens and authorities to produce and exchange contextualised distributed intelligence and information in real time, in a trustworthy and sustainable manner. The IDEAL-CITIES platform will foster the development and uptake of novel IoTPS-based Smart City applications and enhance the associated market base. It will demonstrate new, feasible ways to provide IoTPS applications and services that can contribute to urban citizen well-being and the circular economy of cities. The project set out to demonstrate two fully fledged IoTPS applications, focusing on mobility for the impaired and citizen safety, in close cooperation with involved communities (a non-profit organisation for blind and partially-sighted people and four municipalities, respectively), validating the utility of the proposed platform and approach.

Relevance for Circular Systemic Solutions

The project set out to develop an open modular platform that supports the development, integration and operational management of IoTPS applications, enabling the capture, processing, analysis and exchange of contextualised information among citizens and/or public authorities utilising big data analytics and cloud technologies. The platform will offer cross-sectorial Internet of Things (IoT) services that can be utilised by IoTPS applications. It will contribute to the circular economy of cities by optimising resource utilisation and extending the lifecycle of IoT-enabled devices through intelligent asset management. The IDEAL-CITIES platform will support this functionality by design.
