Flagship demonstration of an integrated biorefinery for dry crops sustainable exploitation towards biobased materials production
Updated on 21.06.2024
FIRST2RUN project aims at demonstrating (TRL8) the techno, economical and environmental sustainability at industrial scale of a first-of-kind value chain where low input and underutilized oil crops (i.e. cardoon) grown in arid and/or marginal lands and not in competition with food or feed, are exploited for the extraction of vegetable oils to be further converted through chemical and biotechnological processes into bio-monomers (mainly pelargonic and azelaic acids) and esters that are applied in the formulation of bioproducts (biolubricants, cosmetics, bioplastics).
Relevance for Circular Systemic Solutions
This project offers technical and environmental reports, along with summaries of stakeholder meetings and replication models of the invention. Furthermore, it also provides a roadmap towards standardization. All of these deliverables render it useful for many stakeholders in cities and regions which are working on all three phases (Map, Design, Implement) of CSS deployment related to biorefineries.
Main results and lessons learnt
The project produced a number of relevant and useful outputs, including:
- Market analysis of biobased materials and products
- Public Summary of LCA analysis
- Report covering the wider societal implications of the project
- Report on strategy and proposal for measures to be undertaken towards standardization
- Public Summary of Techno-economic assessment
- Final report on a round table with stakeholders in the biobased sector
- Replication model for a sustainable third generation biorefinery
