Transition time! A circular economy for plastics

Updated on 26.06.2023

In this publication the members of the Dutch Sustainable Growth Coalition (DSGC) describe innovative cases illustrating how they joined forces with stakeholders to help closing the loop. This knowledge and experience can be a source of inspiration for other companies to also invest in a circular economy. To grow initiatives into impactful sustainable solutions, both harmonised policies and effective legal frameworks are of great importance, for which the DSGC shares specific recommendations.

Relevance for Circular Systemic Solutions

This report shows various examples of how to close the loop in the plastic sector. The examples are categorised under four actions that influence several parts in the plastic value chain:

  1. Promoting principles of circular design
  2. Conscious customer and consumer use
  3. Championing collection infrastructure
  4. Sustainable production and innovative recycling

The report provides, for every action, a policy recommendation that public authorities can execute. For example, Action 1 – promoting principles of circular design – has a recommendation to stimulate effective EPR schemes including eco-fee modulation within those schemes based on recyclability and recycled content of a product. The implementation of the proposed recommendations where regional and local authorities find fit can support the implementation and uptake of a Circular Systemic Solution targeting the plastic value chain and relevant economic sectors.
