SYSCHEMIQ: Joint CCRI Deliverable - The Transition Challenge of Moving from a Linear Plastics Economy to a Circular Plastics Economy
Updated on 10.07.2025
This first Syschemiq report explores the need for coordinated change to achieve a Circular Plastics Economy (CPE) and highlights that key actions are only feasible for actors under specific conditions, such as supportive pricing and design-for-recycling standards. It emphasizes that enabling environments must be created through multi-level governance and collective system-building to align individual and collective interests.
Relevance for Circular Systemic Solutions
The report targets the plastics value chain, particularly packaging waste, and involves stakeholders such as petrochemical companies, recyclers, research institutions, and local governments. It provides practical value for cities and regions by outlining Dual Track Governance (DTG), which aligns business cooperation with broader societal action to create an enabling environment for plastic recycling.
These insights support the implementation of Circular Systemic Solutions by fostering collaboration across value chains and ensuring a stable market for recycled materials. This is most helpful in the Map phase of Circular Systemic Solutions deployment.
