Food waste and social acceptance of a circular bioeconomy: the role of stakeholders
Updated on 20.10.2022
To improve social acceptability, the circular bioeconomy must use residual bio-based feedstock and food waste to reduce dependency on crops and competition with agriculture/food markets. Successful experiences involved stakeholders with different behaviours, values, and backgrounds that inform citizens and civil society organisations (CSOs) and improve the feedstock availability through better coordination.
Relevance for Circular Systemic Solutions
One Circular Systemic Solution is to use food waste as feedstock in the circular bioeconomy, but this presents barriers, especially socio-cultural. Public authorities and CSOs can raise awareness among communities and consumers, while consultations with producer associations and CSOs can improve regulation to address market barriers.
