ERA industrial technology roadmap for circular technologies and business models in the textile, construction and energy-intensive industries
Updated on 26.06.2023
This second industrial technology roadmap, under the European Research Area, sets out 92 circular technologies in the textile, construction and energy-intensive industries, which address all stages of a material and product lifecycle.
More information
This report indicates the means to develop and adopt the 92 circular technologies, which can help reduce the impact of these industries on climate and the environment. It finds a leading position of EU companies in circular technologies, but also looks at the substantial research and innovation investment needs at EU and national levels, and necessary framework conditions to put in place. It also builds on contributions from industry, other R&I stakeholders, Member States and relevant European partnerships.
Relevance for Circular Systemic Solutions
The report discusses investment needs in R&D and innovation, patent trends and analysis of private investments in circular technologies for the three sectors. The report also identifies challenges and barriers to R&D investments in circularity, EU regulatory framework conditions and non-regulatory framework conditions. Some key findings from the report are: a lifecycle approach is necessary to tap into the potential of circular technologies fully; end-of-life technologies must be deployed to the market; and new product design and advanced materials will trigger more systemic change across the entire value chain. The circular technologies from the textile, construction and energy-intensive industries should address all stages of a material and product lifecycle. The report also indicates the means to develop and adopt these technologies. Learnings about the technologies and means can support public authorities that are designing and implementing a Circular Systemic Solution that targets any of the discussed sectors and value chains.
