Meet the CCRI stakeholders: FRONTSH1P (CCRI Project)

Published on 23.11.2023

An interview with Fabio Magrassi, FRONTSH1P Project manager and support to the coordinator.

Countries: Poland, Italy, Greece, Portugal, Netherlands, EU-27

What potential do you see in the CCRI and what do you hope to achieve by participating?

As a representative of the FRONTSH1P project, I can say that we have supported the CCRI since its creation as an initiative that can act as a multiplier for the development of the circular economy within Europe.

Green Deal projects, of which FRONTSH1P is an example, are undoubtedly a good demonstrator of how concrete circular economy activities can have a positive effect on achieving sustainability. However, these projects need an instrument to let the ripple effect happen. I believe that this can come in the first instance from the CCRI, which can take the concrete results of the projects to a larger scale than the individual city or region and reach a wider public for replicating the positive outcomes.

What circular economy experience does your project bring to the CCRI community, especially when it comes to demonstrating innovative solutions?

RONTSH1P innovative solutions will be tested in the Polish Region of Lodz and replicated in four other regions throughout Europe (Stereá Elláda, Greece; Campania, Italy; Região do Norte, Portugal; Fryslân, Netherlands). These solutions are clustered into four CSS, which after the project can be exploited by CCRI Fellow cities and regions.

The first CSS focuses on valorising wood packaging waste, the second on transforming food, agricultural and municipal biowaste into circular bioproducts, and the third on cleaning and reusing liquid and gaseous wastes using microalgae. The fourth CSS will promote and apply a circular approach to industrial and urban plastic waste.

In what ways can you contribute to the development of Circular Systemic Solutions at local and regional level, including by CCRI Pilots and Fellows?

FRONTSH1P foresees two Key Exploitable Results. The first is a circular governance model and operational approach for the territorial cluster, based on a proactive community of stakeholders tested by the five regions. A digital platform and support tools for data exchange and management will enable the deployment and monitoring of CSS.

The second is a replication plan based on mutual learning and a mix of the four CSS, tools and methodologies. This will integrate technical solutions adapted to local conditions, supporting the development of long-term Circular Economy Action Plans. Participation of stakeholders and citizens is key, using the demonstration sites.

Both will be accessible to the CCRI Pilots and Fellows, to be tested and used under the FRONTSH1P exploitation programme, starting in late 2024.
